For our 6th release of the year, we present to you another fine Techno excursion from long-time XTK favourite Mr Nikkolas Research.

With a work-rate and output that can only be described as ‘phenomenal’, Nikko has, as expected, put together a fantastic and wickedly contrasting double A-Side for us that will undoubtedly grace more than a few cones as we near the end of another sweat & sun filled season.

XTK-D#025 is headed up by ‘Reaction’ - a workout piece of stripped, minimal floor-tech driven by a tantalisingly hypnotic lead filter development atop a high pressure kick & bass combi.

It’s Counterpart on this release is White Shadow - another of Nikko’s minimal masterpieces; this time delivered easy on the throttle with a good dose of dubbyness and a wholly irresistible low-end groove peppered with warped vocal glitches.

Pattrix has been kind enough to lend his ear to a rework of Chris Allsopp’s newly released ‘Night Watch’ EP which is available now exclusively at Beatport. Check out the Soundcloud player at the bottom of this post to hear a full HQ preview of his fantasticly moody remix!

After a hugely successful summer riding high in dance music charts worldwide, UK based duo Mynude return for their second outing on xetechno with XTK-D#018 and yet another benchmark release of deep thumping grooves.

Logical Probability bears all the hallmarks of a signature Mynude floor bomb as it thunders through an intense 5 minute stomper interspersed with bursts of digital crescendo and the sound of snapping synapses. A sure-fire floor favourite.

Neural Block takes the train-like rhythmic chugging of the EP’s title track and gives it a good dose of swing. Laden with tight snappy percussion and a low-slung counter groove, it builds the tension to pitch-bending heights before bringing the speakers crashing down with a seriously cone UN-friendly drop.

This is the 11th session to date, each time I do one of these mixes I feel as if I’m solidifying the musical input I’ve been absorbing over the last month or so both at work and at home. I’ve been running Xenophorm Studios (www.facebook.com/xenophormstudios) for a living for well over 3 years now, but for some obscure reason (mostly down to me not wanting to take my beloved xone:92 down to a basement in Hockley on the train…) its taken me until now to get round to actually recording theLAB there. Now the studio has moved to better premises on the other side of town we have a permanent DJ facility set-up (which incidentally is available for hire) and so I can say with great joy that this mix is bought to you from an Allen & Heath mixer through Mackie pre-amps in fully-dithered 24bit 48kHz glory. ooo shiney.

I’ve been fairly quiet (or lazy, depending on which way you look at it…) in terms of ‘blogging’ in this space as of late - mostly because i haven’t felt i had anything interesting to say. But on this particular Saturday night i have a glass of good Malt & am feeling quite eloquent - lucky you eh?

Recently i’ve been spending quite a lot of time getting back to basics at a selection of Birmingham’s ‘local’ parties - the scene in the city is really starting to pick back up after what seems like an eternity of being somewhat barren of quality regular nights and any ’scene’ to actually speak of. Lots of great little spots have been popping up and the cities dance crowd finally seems to have come to terms with the dramatic changes that Techno has undergone in the last few years. It has to be said that Brum lost its mojo when the sound switched back to Berlin in the mid-2000’s - as a collective the city had never been one for doing things by halves, and the sudden change in pitch to a more minimal sound & styling proved a hard pill to swallow for crowds schooled on the thunderous sound of Atomic Jam at the cavernous Que Club & House of God in Subway Citys dark & sweaty mazes.

This years ’sound of the season’ so far has somewhat of a harder edge to it but with all the hallmarks of sound design techniques that have been developed in studio bunkers during Techno’s minimal digital rebirth. Birmingham is cool with this - it’s segmented crowds can once again groove to the same speaker and now atleast everyone is wearing a shirt.

Anyway, i hope you enjoy this May Day weekend mix, its one of my favourites.

Summer has come and gone since the last session, and once again im finding that its dark outside when i leave the studio. Its been a pretty crazy summer, a lot of things are still the same - im still poor, i still spend most of my time in a basement on the outskirts of Birmingham making music for other people and i still rely on my phone to remind me what day it is and what i should be doing when i get woken up too early by the air raid siren i like to call an alarm clock.

On the other hand, a lot of incredibly exciting things have happened - xe:tech:no had been picked up by HousePlanet distribution, which means we will now be going out to some of the biggest online music retailers around including Beatport & ITunes. This is obviously a massive thing for us as it puts us in the position we’ve been striving to be in for a long time! Proceedings will begin on October 5th with our 9th release - Florin H’s fantastic ‘We Trust in Japan’ - follwed shortly by the re-release of our entire catalogue. Welcome one & all to another edition of theLAB Sessions, your monthly dose of electronic technotomfoolery. April has been an interesting month for me musically, with several projects I’m working on (one of which is the first feature length artist release on Xenophorm’s new subdivision by Birmingham MC Dose1 - watch out for that!) entering their final phases which as any artist knows, always provides a pleasant moment to step-back and admire the hard graft that has turned a mere concept into a fully realised entity (hopefully) that is near completion.

I’ve listened to a lot of new tracks this month, and this session is a small reflection of some of the great work that is really banging my drums at the moment. In particular is Anton Pieete’s new release on Inacto Records - “Lovemachine EP”, which i’ve unashamadly played in its entirety, and the latest track by Romanian artist Florin H - “A Cup of Milk”. I gleefully played Florin’s fantastic “We Trust in Japan” during the last session, and have been in contact with him recently to secure his talents for some exclusive remixes of the xe:tech:no back-catalogue to be released later this year.

One more thing i feel i need to point out is that i have finally managed to crack the secret of uploading to the pod-bean FTP server and as a result you’ll be able to listen to episode 5 from start to finish, instead of two cumbersome 30 minute sections. This excited me greatly about 20 minutes ago when i finally managed to pull it off after struggling since October to get it sorted, and on reflection it probably isn’t as epic as i first thought but either way it’s a cause for celebration, so sit back/stand up/catch the bus/do the ironing and dance your ass off to theLAB Session#05.

Greetz from Birmingham and apologies for the rather obvious lack of updates over the first 2 months of this year. I’ve been amazingly preoccupied with an array of diverse distractions since 2009 began - some of them acutly inspiring, and others downright unwelcome, most notably a fire in the building where Xenophorm recording studios is located that put us out of action for several weeks and suceeded in covering the entire complex in a thin veil of black soot. Happy new year indeed. None-the-less i’m here today to present you with a fresh mix, hot off the encoder and ready to aurally excite you =)

This months session comprises of some of my personal favourites from the tracks i’ve discovered over the last few months,  plus the debut outing (as far as i’m aware!) of my latest release - the Real Body Talk EP. Inspired in name by a book i was given by a Hare Krishna who acosted me and effectivly robbed me of £4 in exchange for a “guranga!” emblazoned fridge magnet, the EP is a two track take on opposite ends of the Techno groove-spectrum designed to work the floor from the inside out and in again. Hope ya’ll had a very Merry Christmas and are enjoying the wonders of the seemingly everlasting turkey sandwiches, turkey curry and mince pies the festive season brings. I’m thankfully going to save you the embaressment of a crude joke about Santa emptying his sack(etc) and get straight on with our yuletide speaker-beating…..

As it is the season of goodwill, i have a lil’ treat in the form of a specially extended set featuring myself and my partner-in-grime Chris Allsopp : co-director of Xenophorm and all round crackin’ fella. Recorded live, direct and unplanned @ theLAB on 2xTechnics 1210’s, an A&H Xone:92 and Traktor; it features some of our favourite tracks from this year, plus a couple of old favourites we dug out the crate =) Because of its size, the session is split across 3 parts this month, each lasting roughly half an hour.
